New South Wales (located in Southeastern Australia) is a diverse area, boasting 14 unique wine regions, the most famous being the Hunter Valley. The Riverina – Griffith region is the largest within New South Wales and is important as it produces 15% of all wine from New South Wales. For red wines, Shiraz is prominent and rich plum characteristics are typical of Shiraz from the area. The Petite Sirah carries a dark berry and backbone to the wine. Riverina is in the forefront of natural environmental farming and the area has a good water supply for grape production. Riverina has a viticultural history dating back to 1912. The soils are red brown clay embedded with sands and limestone gravel from ancient stream systems. Many wineries in this area are family owned and operated.
