Ridge Vineyards Three Valleys Zinfandel 750mL
A blend of mostly Zinfandel with splashes of other grapes, they come together for a rich, delectable wine with firm tannins, silky texture, and a long finish.
A medium to full-bodied rendition, this gorgeous red is composed of 70% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 15% Carignane, 3% Grenache and 2% Mataro. It is restrained on the nose, showing a bit of under-ripe red fruits and a touch of oak spice. The palate is round, with a good balanced acidity. An hour or so of decanting is required to really bring out the expressive character of the wine. Sour cherries, ripe raspberries, tobacco leaf and cinnamon can be found on the palate. Chewy tannins hold the structure of the wine together from start to finish. Recommend to lay this bottle down for another few years to let the flavours develop.
Despite the welcome wet spring, rainfall in our Sonoma County vineyards remained below average. Flowering occurred in late May, during ideal weather; we thinned the crop to assure intense color and flavor. A mild summer ripened the grapes for a mid-September harvest. Picked by taste, each parcel fermented separately on its natural yeasts. For full extraction of color and tannin, the fermentors were pumped over for seven days, on average, before pressing. Malolactic fermentation finished by November, allowing early assemblage. Once in barrel, the wine was racked off the sediment every two months to clarify naturally. After ten months, tannins have softened. Fresh berry fruit and barrel spice give the Three Valleys immediate appeal, and it will be most enjoyable over the next three to five years. EB (7/10)
