India Pale Ale

India Pale Ale (or IPA) is a beloved beer style but even among beer enthusiasts the category can be polarizing. If IPA isn't your style but you're considering giving it another chance we would like to offer a couple of suggestions to help appreciate this bitter brew...

Try different kinds! It's pretty easy to assume that the first, second, or third IPA that you've tried is indicative of the entire category. Different iterations of the IPA include American-style, English-style, Double/Imperial, Juicy, and Hazy, as well as sub-styles like "East Coast" and "West Coast" variations on the America-style. Start with an adjacent style such as Pale Ale or Extra Special Bitter. These beer styles are similar to the IPA in that they have a prevalent bitter character. Unlike IPAs, Pale Ales and Extra Special Bitters arent typically crafted to showcase the hop flavours but rather to strike balance between malt sweetness and hop bitterness. This can make them seem more approachable and more quaffable, as a person doesn't need to acclimatize to the astringent bitter flavour as much.
